Actually this is a radio adaptation of Pinter's 1990 TV screenplay of Bowen's novel. Leaving aside the question of its closeness to the spirit of Bowen's original, this is Pinter through and through, and one can see why he was drawn to the original source. It's a classy production (from Catherine Bailey), wonderfully suited to radio, Pinter's typically elliptical and spare dialogue suiting the themes of wartime menace and betrayal, and Anna Chancellor is excellent as Stella.
